Orphan Boy Gig Review

Show Date: 16th August, 2010

Location: Dublin Castle, London (Camden)

Releases: ‘Shop Local’ (2008, LP) & ‘Passion, Pain & Loyalty’ (2010, LP)

Orphan Boy is a band that is going somewhere. There seemed to be an agreed sense emerging from the Dublin Castle boozer that these Cleethorpes chaps have a sound far too big to be concealed in a room of around no more than a sixty (at least now) elated fans.  Think crowds of thousands & you might be closer their deserved fruition.  I think it would be an impossible task to contain them for much longer.  Pick your superlatives – it matches it & exceeds it, I promise.

From their live set, like with their two records, you get the feeling that there are two appeasing sides to their music; there’s their edgy indie-punk bite (as seen on Shop Local) &  then there is that unprecedented composure that sorts them from the majority (that stood out like a sore thumb on Passion, Pain & Loyalty.)  These ideas may perhaps sound conflicting for one band without seeing one of their shows, but it is beyond visible to state that these two very different releases have culminated together to provide a model of how live performers perform; a humongous array of variation & music cannot help but be liked. Add this to the fact there are three chaps on stage that are as passionate about music as anybody you could ever meet & the formula is formula is complete.

My overall assessment, said with a smile, is as clear as (non-frosted) glass - See them before they truly burst out.  This is ‘indie music’ as it should be; rough & ready, professionally executed (that with others sometimes goes missing) & a collection lovable tracks waiting to be loved, that will see those Last.fm play counts soaring.

The lucky part of this website is that you don’t have to listen to me go on ….
